The Resuscitation Council UK released new first aid guidelines in late 2025, and they’re now being rolled out across training in 2026.
These updates are based on the latest evidence and aim to make first aid simpler, more effective, and easier for people to act with confidence.
First Aid Takes Centre Stage
For the first time, first aid has its own dedicated section in the guidelines.
The message is clear:
What you do in the first few minutes really matters
There’s a stronger focus on early action, scene safety, and giving people the confidence to step in and help.
A Simpler Way to Assess Casualties
A major change is the introduction of the ABCDE approach:
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
Disability
Exposure
This gives first aiders a clear, structured way to prioritise life-threatening problems quickly.
Call for Help Sooner
The updated guidance strongly emphasises:
Call 999 early — especially if someone is unresponsive
Using speakerphone and following instructions from call handlers is now a key part of first aid.
Updated Emergency Treatments
Advice has been refreshed across a range of incidents, including:
Severe bleeding (including tourniquets)
Choking
Cardiac arrest and CPR
Asthma and anaphylaxis
Stroke and chest pain
There’s also recognition of modern risks like opioid overdoses.
Airway Comes First
A key principle reinforced in the new guidance:
Airway always takes priority
Even in suspected spinal injuries, maintaining an open airway is the most important action.
What This Means for You
If your first aid training was completed before 2026, you may not have covered these updates.
While certificates last three years, regular refreshers are recommended to keep skills current and confidence high.
Final Thoughts
These changes are designed to make first aid:
Simpler
More effective
More accessible
Most importantly, they reinforce one key message: Don’t hesitate — taking action can save a life
